New grants received in support of 2011 Programs
It is with great appreciation that we announce the award of several grants that help assure our educational programs continue in the Southern Willamette Valley during 2011.
Recently, FT&F received a $7,000 grant from the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund to be used for general support for our programs. We also received an additional grant in the amount of $2,500 from the Weyerhaeuser Active Employee Volunteer program.
Over the years, Weyerhaeuser employees have provided invaluable contributions to forestry education on many levels — serving as resource leaders during our Forest Field Days, as board members helping to direct the organization, and as hosts and guides for our public forestry tours.
We are also pleased to announce the receipt of a $2,500 contribution from Plum Creek Timber Company in support of our Forest Field Days program, and an award of $5,000 from the Friends of Paul Bunyan Foundation for general support. We thank them sincerely for their generosity, both past and present!
The funds are well used, as more than 1,700 students, teachers and parent chaperones from 18 schools will attend a Forest Field Days during 2011. It is an opportunity they would not have, if it were not for the contributions of so many.Grants received in support of 2010 Forest Field Days and Forest Discovery Tours
We thank the Woodard Family Foundation of Cottage Grove for its award of $1,000 in support our 2010 summer Forest Discovery Tours series, which is free to the public and designed to illustrate the current forestry practices of local public and private landowners and managers in Lane County.
The Woodard family is the founder of the Woodard Lumber Company, which was in operation near the current site for the Cottage Grove Dam until 1957. The Woodard Family Foundation began in 1952 with the mission of "assisting charitable organizations in developing the internal capacity to meet present and future needs; not to remove responsibilities from people." The family remains an active employer in the Cottage Grove area, and over the years, it has helped to found a hospital, library, resort, and a retirement community, among many other good works.
We also thank the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation for its continued support through a recent grant award of $5,000 for the Forest Field Day program. This year, 1,300 middle school students — with their teachers and parent chaperones — will learn the basics of land management and resource protection on three family tree farms using an interdisciplinary curricula based on the real-life scenario of a family inheriting timbered property. We are pleased to say that local Weyerhaeuser employees annually donate close to 150 hours of time and expertise to our Forest Field Days.
Since 1948 — in keeping with its goal of releasing the potential in people to strengthen communities and advance sustainability — the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation has directed more than $195 million to the communities where Weyerhaeuser employees work, live and play. Nationwide, its annual philanthropic budget totals $9 million.
Also providing generous support for the Forest Field Days program is the Plum Creek Foundation with an award of a $2,500 grant. Plum Creek is the largest and most geographically diverse private landowner in the nation, with approximately 7 million acres in major timber producing regions of the United States.
In 2008 alone, the Plum Creek Foundation provided more than $900,000 to U.S. communities, focusing on four areas, including: community improvement; educational programs for students of all ages; environmental stewardship and education programs; and organizations that creatively deliver quality arts and performance programs. Locally, Plum Creek has offices in Toledo and Coos Bay, with a seedling nursery in Cottage Grove, says Plum Creek Forester Brad Moehlmann. The foundation supports many local programs, Moehlmann says, ranging from outdoor educational programs such as Forests Today & Forever to community domestic violence prevention.
We are grateful as well to Menasha Forest Management Services (by The Campbell Group), for a matching grant in the amount of $1,500 to be used in general support of FT&F programs. Helping meet that grant is the Lane Small Woodlands Association, which provided $1,000 toward the goal — and whose members also provide invaluable resources and volunteers throughout the year. Helping round out the ‘matching’ grant funds were businesses Blue Sky Logging and Home Depot, along with contributions by several supportive individuals.
Grants received for the 2009 natural resource educational programs.
In January, FT&F received a $5,000 grant from the Friends of Paul Bunyan Foundation in support of this summer’s Forest Discovery Tour series, held annually in July and August. This is the third grant received over the years by FT&F from the foundation, which is supported by the Associated Oregon Loggers.
The free tour series, which is offered in partnership with Lane Community College under Continuing Education, and with support from the Oregon Forest Resources Institute, gives participants an up-close look at the sustainable forest management practices of local private and public landowners.
Also received in June is a $2,500 grant from the International Paper Foundation. The IP Foundation typically funds programs that focus on young children and/or outdoor classrooms, forestry and air and water quality programs. The funds will be used for purchasing materials and supplies for Forest Field Days, which serves our area’s middle school population. On average, close to 1,300 students attend Forest Field Days each year.
We also extend our thanks to the three organizations listed below that provided grant funding during the 2008-09 school year in support of our programs.
The Woodard Family Foundation of Cottage Grove awarded $3,500 in support our 2008 summer Forest Discovery Tours series, which is free to the public and designed to illustrate the current forestry practices of local public and private landowners and managers in Lane County.
And, in keeping with its goal of releasing the potential in people to strengthen communities and advance sustainability, the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation generously provided $8,500 for general support of FT&F programs. Since 1948, the Foundation has directed more than $195 million to the communities where Weyerhaeuser employees work, live and play. Nationwide, its annual philanthropic budget totals $9 million.
Also flowing from the Weyerhaeuser Company, FT&F received $3,500 in 2008 through a Weyerhaeuser Active Volunteer Employees (WAVE) grant. The WAVE grant is based on volunteer participation in local programs such as Forest Field Days, which annually introduces more than 1,200 Lane and Linn county middle school students to the complexities of sustainable forest management, including harvest, reforestation and the protection of water, wildlife and soils as mandated by the Forest Practice Act. Weyerhaeuser employees annually donate close to 150 hours of time and expertise to our Forest Field Days.
